In a certain aspect the camera is art’s most powerful machine. It is used to document and recored but also to manipulate certain contexts that we experience through image. The popularity of the camera has two notable insurgencies. One being the rise of the kodak, and the craze of being able to take a portrait with the photograph becoming relatively accessible. The other being the shift to almost everyone carrying smartphone cameras everywhere they go with high quality image always available. With the later we have seen an increased amount of automation. We are slowly letting go of the manual controls in favour of being at the peril of a technology making our decisions for us. The automatic digital image needs the bare minimum of effort from the controller. Focus is automatically selected, along with aperture and shutter speed, the flash can be automatically fired, colours are balanced and can be corrected with one click once the image has been taken. We even have cameras using facial recognition to realise the shutter to make sure everyone is smiling simultaneously or cameras that capture the seconds just before and after the shutter is pressed.

Technological automation has its benefits but of course what redundancies does it create in terms of human input or creative control.  Automatism was a technique developed and heavily relied on by the surrealists in the 1920s. It became a tool within their arsenal that helped explore the subconscious mind through automatic responses. I feel that in a way we can capitalise on these automatic techniques to expose the fragility of technological interventions. One of the surrealists automatic techniques was to simply write. This required the participator to write devoid of any external information and allow the brain to vicariously take over the motion of writing in a hope of creating surreal sentences that stemmed from their subconscious. These sections of text took form as absurd poems that highlighted a sense of humour. They challenged our acceptance of langue and sensibility. Yet fundamentally they are non-sensical.

The modern day smart phone has a feature that allows the user to submit words in a passage of text based on what the internal computing thinks will happen next. The software gives the user three options, three different words that could follow the word that has just been entered. I decided to use this feature to create a poem in the similar vein of automatic writing. I would not have control over what words might appear. I chose to create a sequence of the three options available. Some poems simply chose the first and most relevant word, others would work in sequences of 1st then 2nd then 3rd and repeat. There were various combinations that produced theses sentences developed from the computer. At first the sentence would make sense but then drift off into absurdity. the text moved through various phases in one sentence. The computer did not understand the order of words that stood before it, it just wanted to take the last word and guess what might come next. In this sense we create a sentence that transforms through out. When using these sequences, I found that the it would get to the point of repetition. The unfamiliarity of the way the language is working is quite humours. I feel it reflects the process and ambition of the surrealist poems but the process is alway trying to create a correct sentence. In that sense it creates this strange parallel between realness and absurdity.

I’ve started to wonder how my of a personal poem this is. With the complexity of these algorithms that are in place to create these word suggestions, I would not be surprised if these suggestions responded to the way that i communicated within the context of my own phone. Even if there is no difference i think it would be interesting to use devices with different manufactures but similar features to create these poems. They will almost become the voices of each device. I have been using a Apple iPhone but it would be interesting to see the poems that might come from a Samsung and how the language changes. Or in fact become familiar echoes of our own personal language being reflected through the text.

With these poems as well as the book I created last term 5,658 titles of abstract art, I am responding to text in a non traditional sense. Both books express information in ways are against their genuine intentions. Bending these ideas of text forces the audience into a unfamiliar environment. Often languages and text abides by may grammatical rules but in a way I’m disregarding a large chunk of theses rules in order to create a level of abstraction, surrealism and general absurdity. Binding the text into books almost forces them to be considered seriously. It gives them a presence even though its contents may adhere to unfamiliar traditions.
