In the last unit I created three digital collages, as a part of a small series that I titled Google Image Still Life. These collages all used images that had been found on the internet to recreate a still life painting from Van Gough, Cezanne and Matisse. In these initial stages, this series revolved around objectivity. I felt that google images was a service that was full of objectivity. Any object or image of an object has become searchable and this series became an investigation into that fact. Artists like Van Gough, Cezanne and Matisse crafted beauty through the application of paint and observation of objects they had arranged in front of them. Objects that could be considered vaguely banal were transformed through expressive paint application. The process that I went though aimed to transform some of the most banal images on the internet into art, and asked the question is there anything expressive about a stock photograph of an orange?
These initial collages remained relatively undeveloped yet the ideas continued to resonate. In the previous unit I ran out of time and became much more focused on other elements of my work and this project only consisted of only three images. I left the project completely unfinished and knew that there was a lot more room to expand into and a lot more work to be created.
As this work already has had a starting point I feel that its beneficially to begin creating instead of pondering to much about concepts and context. I know that these ideas will bolden and grow as more and more images are made. I feel confident that through creating and reflecting a path will begin to form and this series will become a possibility for my final submissions.
